Axillary Web Syndrome (AWS), commonly known as cording, can develop because of sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) or axillary lymph node dissection (ALND), procedures often performed in individuals diagnosed with breast cancer. SLNB involves the removal of a few axillary (underarm) lymph nodes, while ALND involves the removal of more. Additionally, scar tissue from surgery to the chest area can also contribute to the development of cording.
AWS often occurs due to the formation of fibrous scar tissue in the lymphatic vessels and surrounding tissues following surgery. This scar tissue can lead to the development of visible or
palpable ropelike cords under the skin of the inner arm, typically starting from the site of surgery and extending downwards.
The most common sign of AWS is the appearance of these cordlike structures, which may become more noticeable when the arm is raised. This can be accompanied by sensations of pain, tightness, or discomfort, particularly during arm movement. Axillary Web Syndrome can also restrict the range of motion in the affected arm, shoulder, or elbow, impacting daily activities and quality of life.
Each session is tailored to your individual needs and sensitivities. Cording treatment strategies may include hands-on therapy to improve range of motion, gentle stretching exercises, and
techniques to break up the cords. In some cases, manual lymphatic drainage can help alleviate symptoms.
While Axillary Web Syndrome can be distressing, it is often temporary and can improve with appropriate management and rehabilitation. Early recognition and intervention play a crucial role in minimizing its impact on recovery and quality of life for individuals undergoing breast cancer treatment.
