Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage

What is Manual Lymphatic Drainage?

Lymphatic drainage massage, also known as manual lymphatic drainage, relieves the swelling that happens when medical treatment or illness blocks your lymphatic system. Lymphatic drainage massage encourages the drainage of lymph nodes, decongestion of the lymphatic system and promotes movement of lymphatic fluid throughout the body through gentle highly specified techniques.

What is Lymphedema?

Lymphedema occurs when there is damage to the lymphatic system. It is a condition characterized by swelling in the arms or legs, caused by trauma to the lymphatic system. This disruption prevents lymph fluid from draining properly, leading to an accumulation of protein rich fluid and subsequent swelling. It can develop as a result of surgery, such as lymph node removal, often associated with cancer treatment. Lymphedema can materialize months or even years after cancer treatment, such as mastectomy, lumpectomy, sentinel lymph node biopsy (SLNB) or axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) or radiation therapy, which may have affected the lymph nodes or lymphatic vessels.

Signs and Symptoms of Lymphedema?

  • Swelling: Persistent swelling, often in one arm or leg, which may begin gradually and worsen over time. The swelling may range from mild to severe and can affect the entire limb or localized areas.
  • Feeling of Heaviness or Tightness: The affected limb may feel heavy, tight, or full, even without visible swelling.
  • Decreased Range of Motion: Difficulty moving the affected limb due to stiffness or tightness.
  • Pitting Edema: Pressing on the swollen area may leave a temporary indentation or "pit" that fills slowly.
  • Aching or Discomfort: Persistent aching, discomfort, or pain in the affected limb.
  • Skin Changes: Changes in the texture or appearance of the skin, such as tightening, hardening, or thickening. The skin may also feel tight and less elastic.
  • Recurring Infections: Increased susceptibility to infections, such as cellulitis, in the affected limb.
  • Clothing or Jewelry Tightness: Noticeable changes in the fit of clothing, shoes, or jewelry due to swelling.

It's important to note that lymphedema can develop months or even years after cancer treatment.

Seeking Medical Attention

If you notice any signs or symptoms of lymphedema, it's essential to consult with a healthcare professional experienced in managing lymphedema. Early detection and treatment can help manage symptoms and prevent complications.

The Twin Peaks Therapy Approach

Twin Peaks Therapy provides personalized care tailored to your specific needs and treatment goals. By focusing on educating and empowering you can manage lymphedema more effectively, which can enhance your overall quality of life. Effective management of lymphedema involves a comprehensive approach:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD): This specialized massage technique helps to stimulate lymph flow and reduce swelling.
  • Pre-Surgery Assessment: I recommend an initial consultation before surgery to assess range of motion and take measurements. This proactive approach helps in planning timely post-surgical treatments.
  • Post-Surgery Care: Lymphedema treatment ideally begins soon after surgery to prevent the onset of painful swelling and promote recovery.
  • Education and Support: Understanding the lymphatic system, learning appropriate exercises, and practicing proper skin care are essential components of managing      lymphedema effectively.
